NCTC offers new e-mail protection service

Postini is an e-mail protection program that blocks unwanted e-mail from being delivered to North Central's Internet customer accounts. Every North Central customer's existing Internet account has been activated for Postini protection of their North Central e-mail account using default settings. We recommend you get into your account and establish the settings for the protection you want. You can even turn them off if you wish.

To log in, go to www.postini.com and click on the "Message Center" on the very top of the page. Type in your user name and password from your North Central Internet account. You can turn your junk mail settings on or off. If they are on they will filter all of your e-mail messages as you specify. If they are off, no filtering will be done.

You can filter e-mail by its content in the categories of sexually explicit, get rich quick, special offers, and racially insensitive. There are five settings to choose from in each category. Lenient means there is no filtering and aggressive means very close monitoring. (This is good if you're concerned about your children receiving inappropriate e-mails).

There is also a master filter for all bulk e-mail that you can set.

Here you can provide a list of people you would like to receive e-mail from. If someone is on this list, their e-mails to you will go directly to your e-mail account as they always have. Therefore, if you find that someone's e-mail messages are being blocked to you, add them to your approved sender list. Likewise, you can specify e-mail addresses or even domain names that you do not wish to receive e-mails from. For instance, you can specify not to receive e-mail message from any name @ yahoo.com. However, if there is one person you would like to receive e-mails from with a yahoo address, you can add them to your approved list. Then all yahoo e-mails will be blocked except those from that one address.

You can turn your Virus Settings On or Off. When they are on, all of your e-mail messages are scanned for potential virus. If an e-mail message contains a virus, it is quarantined in your Postini account until you review it.

You should check your Postini account on a regular basis (very often at first) to see what e-mails have been blocked. When you log in, using the user name and password you will see your list of suspicious junk mail. The information includes the sender, subject, category (reason why it was blocked) and date. You can click on the subject line to read the e-mail if you'd like. You can choose the message and have it delivered to your e-mail software or you can have it removed.

Virus Protection

Please note that it is your responsibility to protect your computer from viruses. North Central Telephone encourages you to purchase your own virus protection and/or firewall for your home or business computer or network. If your computer is infected with a virus or port scan, it will infect others and therefore can be shut down without notice (see terms and conditions).

If you believe your computer has a virus, we recommend the following:

You may run this free software, however, you need an ongoing protection for your computer on a constant basis, which will require purchasing a license for the software.
